Ninja Uniforms Historically, ninjas took advantage of whatever costume they needed to pass unheeded, including dressing as farmers, monks, or samurai as the situation required. Ninja uniforms of a solid dark color such as red, blue, or black could be worn at night for concealment. The traditional black Ninja Uniform, or Shinobi Shozoku that is worn by students of Ninjutsu is based on the costumes worn in Kabuki Theater by prop handlers, but were also adopted to portray ninjas, adding an element of surprise when one of the stage crew suddenly became part of the play . This ninja costume incorporates split toed, soft soled tabi boots, dark, loose fitting clothing with numerous hidden pockets, and either a hood and scarf, or two “sanjaku-tenugui” or three foot clothes around the face.
