Nunchaku
Nunchucks, or nunchuku are common in both Chinese and Okinawan martial arts. There are differing legends concerning the origin of nunchucks, however it is likely that they are a descendent of the farmer’s flail. Ideally, each wood section should be the length of the bone from one’s elbow to wrist, and the connecting chain or string should be about five inches. The wooden handles were traditionally made from a flexible hardwood that had been buried in mud for several years to harden, and then connected with a horsehair string. Modern nunchucks can be made from wood, fiberglass, aluminum, or plastic. Styrofoam practice nunchucks are also available.
